Viral Hemorrhagic Fever: Crimean-Congo on the Rise

A Deadly Tick-Borne Threat

Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF)

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a severe tick-borne illness that poses a growing threat around the globe. Transmitted through the bite of infected ticks, CCHF causes a wide range of symptoms, including severe fever, headache, and muscle aches.

Rapid Onset and High Mortality

CCHF's onset is sudden, with initial symptoms developing within a few days after the tick bite. As the disease progresses, it can lead to severe bleeding, organ failure, and even death. The mortality rate for CCHF is high, ranging from 10% to 50%.

Tick-Borne Origins

The virus responsible for CCHF, Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever virus (CCHFV), is carried by ticks. Infected ticks can transmit the virus to humans through their saliva during a blood meal. CCHFV belongs to the family of Bunyaviridae, which also includes other viruses such as Hantavirus and Rift Valley fever virus.
